I’m a big fan of music, but I also really enjoy reading about and watching documentaries about cult leaders. Something that really works for me, then, is the music made by cult leaders, as it obviously combines two of my interests into a tidy package.

I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite cult leader musical artists.

David Koresh

David Koresh was Leader of The Branch Davidians, he believed himself to be their final prophet. A 1993 raid by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the subsequent siege by the FBI ended with the burning of the Branch Davidian ranch outside of Waco, Texas. Koresh, 54 adults and 21 children were found dead after the fire. But everyone knows about that. Here are some fun facts about Dave you may not know:

By the age of 11, he had memorized the entire New Testament.

At 23 he had a sexual relationship with the leader of the Branch Davidians at the time, a lady of 78 called Lois Roden. That is fucking gross.

When he was holed up in Waco shagging 13 year olds he and his followers liked nothing more than to lay down a few banging tunes about subjects that interested him(mainly himself).

01 Book Of Daniel

This is called Book Of Daniel, I like this, it’s pretty humble and he’s not singing about himself so much here, plus it’s folky and pretty nice. I like his voice.

Waiting so Long

He lost the plot musically (and in some other ways maybe) after a point, and started playing low budget, poor man’s Van Halen power ballads about himself, but there’s definitely a certain charm about these songs. This one is called Waiting So Long, I think it’s about how everyone’s been waiting for him or something.

Mad Man In Waco

This one is called Mad Man In Waco, I like how he’s so into himself. I guess if you’re God or Jesus or whoever you’ve got to be.
