Vancouver’s Shimmering Stars understand such crushing nihilism, but it might not be immediately clear on first listen, beacause “I’m Gonna Try” is a riddle of a song. The band wrap up their heartache and hatred in the most swoonsom slow-mo swinging 60s stomp, coming on like a super-tragic episode of Heartbeat, probably about a highschool shoot out. That’s not two things you’d ordinarily put together.

You see, Shimmering Stars are trying to be better people, but they carry a beautiful violence in their hearts.
