Electric Wire Hustle or EWH are a Hip Hop tinged psychedelic neo-soul group from New Zealand (sounds kinda gay I know, but they’re dope) comprising of 4 members Myele Manzanza, Taay Ninh, Mara TK and Benny Tones.
As well as having stupid names that make them sound like chicks, they’re four guys from Wellington New Zealand, and they’re really fucking good. Specialising in Dilla/Ques Love esque percussion with extremely funky brass and strings, and vocals as buttery as my boy Marvin.
The band formed in 2006 and were already players on the underground NZ music scene with other artists like Steve Spacek (who also features on the album), they’ve also worked with artists and beatsmiths such as SA-RA, Wajeed, Georgia Anne Muldrow and so on….
EWH’s first album Every Waking Hour was first released in 2009 and has just been re-released as a self titled LP on the U.K. label BBE, who always have dope recordings and pressings, so it’s a quality product. The album features some of the heads I’ve already mentioned, along with Stacey Epps and top boy Declaime dropping some ill shit.
Here’s some of my favourite tracks off the L.P.
Enjoy.
