TSD: Olof Palme, politician (1927 – 1986)

I used to find Olof Palme’s assassination mad fascinating as a teenager. I think it was the last time Sweden held any appeal for anyone ever.

Olof Palme, politician (January 30, 1927 – February 28, 1986)

Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was assassinated on February 28, 1986. This makes him the only European leader to have been assassinated between 1934 (King Alexander I of Yugoslavia) and 2003 (Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Dindic). Despite being a head of state Palme preferred to walk around without bodyguards, and on the evening of his murder he and his wife had decided to go to the cinema on a whim. Although there were no seats available, they were allowed in anyway. Upon leaving the cinema he was shot dead at point blank range by an unknown assassin.

Conspiracy theorists have come up with a large number of possible suspects including the Indian secret service angry at attempts to derail an arms bid, Rhodesian Selous Scouts loyal to apartheid South Africa and American white supremacists on holiday. In 2006 the Swedish TV channel SVT fingered Christer Pettersson, a Stockholm-area drug addict. They claimed that Pettersson had originally intended to kill his drug dealer but murdered the Prime Minister of Sweden by accident because they wore a similar jacket.
