Fiction Single Launch

Fiction just released their debut single with a party at The Alibi in Dalston. We went down, watched them play a few songs, listened to their mates play some records, took some photos, that kind of thing. Nothing that remarkable there.

You see, I probably shouldn’t like Fiction that much. Along with bands like La Shark, Is Tropical and Egyptian Hip Hop who sound like they’ve listened to a lot of Late of the Pier and Duran Duran, Fiction represent yet another wave of young boys in bands with more managers and press agents than records, all hooking up with unfeasibly hot girls (I heard a rumour about Warpaint – those girls are FINE!) and having the time of their lives – enough to make you sick, isn’t it?

But the thing is, Fiction are actually potentially way more interesting than their associations suggest. They sound not unlike a lot of the Sound of Young Scotland bands from the mid 80s – Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, Josef K. That’s rarely a bad thing. And remarkably, they seem to lack that obnoxious attitude that’s staple to being in a band that the industry likes. Safe guys making smart music, what’s not to like?

Thanks to Hannah Davis for the photos and you can make your own mind up by listening to my favourite song of theirs just below.
